Cornhusker Boys State: Boys' State is a plan for training in the functional aspects of citizenship. Its purpose is to teach the youth of today constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. Boys' State attempts to show that our form of government has not outworn its usefulness; that all a democracy needs is an intelligent citizenry and clean, honest impartial administration responsive to the will of the people. Junior Law Cadet: Each year, high school Juniors from each of the American Legion's 15 Districts are chosen to participate in the Junior Law Cadet Program. Participants will stay at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island where they will explore and experience the various aspects of law enforcement and receive training from representatives of city, county, state and federal law enforcement officers. High School Oratorical Program: The Nebraska American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest" is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship. County Government: This program is designed to give governmental instruction to high school students with a goal of creating an informed citizen who is active in the area of government which most closely affects the everyday life of the individual.
Memorial Day: An American federal holiday observed annually on the last Monday of May. Memorial day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly know as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate Soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial day has been extended to all Americans who have died in all wars.
Veterans Day: Veterans Day is an American federal holiday, celebrated annually on November 11, intended to thank living Veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.
